Going nuts

In our new yard, we have a, English walnut tree. I am so excited to get walnuts this fall, I can't even tell you. I use them in everything - breads, cakes, pastry, salads... I even grind up nuts into pie crust. They're delicious and (in moderation) quite good for you.

The problem is, I have no idea how to take care of a walnut tree. I've searched the internet for some good how-to guides and mostly I get year 1-5 advice (starting, grafting and pollinating your tree) or a lot of snooty rambling on how English walnuts are really Persian walnuts because blah blah... So I guess I actually have a Persian walnut tree.

Who out there in blog-land knows how to care for an already established, large and healthy walnut tree? How do I keep bugs out of the nuts? Do I need to prune anything? I appreciate any and all advice. The winner of Best Tree Care Advice gets a pound of fresh walnuts this fall.

I don't really know, but I think you can have someone come spray the tree for bug...

I would just call Stewarts or someone else like that to come spray. I'm sure you can probably buy your own chemicals or whatever they use but after having to sequester the kids into the house, cover your skin and protect your eyes, mix the product, spray it evenly, etc, it's a whole lot more effort then having them come. We had them come spray our apple tree when we lived in TLBH. They will come do a one time (dormant bug) once a year spray or you can purchase a plan (4 times a year?) for all of your fruit trees. They have a big huge hose attached to their truck and have it done in literally just a few minutes. Might be worth it to find out. I think the yellow pages have a coupon.

Okay, I also just remembered about the Utah County Extension Office. They're the professionals when you have a question. Their website says they have Master Gardners and Horticulturists on staff to call. Try this website...

My grandparents had a 200+ acre walnut orchard for decades. My grandma's gone now, and my grandpa wouldn't be now help at all. All I remember is how fun it was to slingshot the green ones at my cousins! Sorry!
